Oatmeal Cookies

From Grandma’s Favorites envelope, these oatmeal cookies were made often and well. I’m pretty sure this cookie recipe was the most frequently used one she had. The wear and tear and staining on the paper tells me that’s true.

Oatmeal Cookies

2/3 C shortening
1 C sugar
1 C milk
1 t soda
1/2 t Allspice
1/2 t Cinnamon
1/4 t nutmeg
2 C rolled oats
2 C flour
1 C raisins
1 C nuts
3 eggs

chop raisins & walnuts fine. add beaten eggs to sugar, flour & milk. melted fat last. add spices & soda in the flour.

An option on the bottom of the page:  add 1 C applesauce & 1/2 C flour  Bake 400°

These were pretty darn good cookies, even to a picky kid like me who didn’t much care for raisins.

  1. I made a batch of these last night–I substituted dark chocolate chips for the raisins and used pecans. I don’t stock ‘shortening’ the way Grandma Falba always did, so I used butter. Everything is better with butter, right? I have a large cooking sheet with about a 1″ lip, I spread the dough out in an even layer and baked approx 15 minutes at 400 and these turned out very well. Another winner from Grandma!
