The Best Sugar Cookie Recipe (1 of 2)

How to make the best sugar cookies? Ask whoever makes your favorites and go from there. That’s what I’ve done here, taking from Grandma Falba’s own recipes. She had 2 sugar cookie recipes in her favorites envelope, on this first one she noted that she made them at ‘the Center’ and they were ‘good’. Grandma worked for a time at the Salvation Army’s daycare center, cooking meals for the kids that stayed there.

Sugar Cookies

2 c sugar
1/2 c sour milk
4 c flour
1/4 t baking soda
3/4 c shortening
2 eggs well beaten
1 t nutmeg
1 c nuts (optional)
1/4 t salt

Cream shortening & sugar, add eggs. Sift flour, measure & sift with baking soda, nutmeg & salt. Add milk alternately with dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto well-oiled baking sheet. Bake in hot oven 430° 10-12 minutes. 70 servings.

Grandma worked at the daycare center a couple of years during the late 60s. Many of the small children there could not pronounce her last name so instead of calling her Grandma Wixom, she suggested they say Grandma Whiskey. I’ll bet they never forgot the cook at daycare named Grandma Whiskey!
